So last night's weekly game I'd consider an unmitigated success. People cracked up laughing, there were "Oooh"s "Ahh"s and "Oh shit!"s. There were pithy comments by my players. There was the slaying of many undead.
Sometimes I run a bad game. Not every game has people smiling and interested. I try each game to stop doing the things that bored or pisses off the characters, and focus on the fun. But I think the success this time comes mostly from one major fact: they Leveled. Final fantasy music was hummed, and a good half hour was spent settling in and examining their new powers. For this wasn't any level. They started the game last night at level 11.
Paragons.
So in honor of their advancement, I created an "environmental effect.". This might have been overpowered, but sometimes I think it's important for the heroes to feel powerful; how else can you terrify them with higher powered monsters? Anyways, the characters leveled mid combat, because game ended mid encounter last game. I give XP at the end of the session for finished encounters, and there was enough to tip them over. So to reflect them gaining these powers mid fight, at the top of the round all levelled characters took this action.
Shit Just Got Real
Close burst 2.
Stat which increased by leveling vs Will.
Enemies hit in burst grants combat advantage to the attacker. Allies in burst gain a +1 to attack enemies hit. Allies in burst can also make an "Aid Another" action as a move action for this round.
Description: The newfound talents you have gained rattle your enemies and they lose confidence, and inspire your allies to greater heroics!
It could have been implemented better, but I like random effects and abilities for characters to use.
